LEAP Wisconsin is an initiative of the University of Wisconsin System that seeks to increase understanding of the value and purpose of liberal education for UW students and Wisconsin citizens.

Leadership through Campus Action

LEAP Wisconsin is an initiative of the University of Wisconsin System that seeks to increase understanding of the value and purpose of liberal education for UW students and Wisconsin citizens.

The following activities are examples of ways the UW institutions are engaging faculty, staff, and students in making the teaching and learning of liberal education goals intentional within and beyond the classroom.

Groups and Dialogues

    • SAGLA, the UW System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts, composed of UW Colleges Deans and Letters & Science Deans, as well as faculty and staff from each UW institution.
    • Online and face-to-face dialogues among faculty and students across colleges and departments on the meaning and value of liberal education.
    • Seven campus-community dialogues on the topic of Literacy and Civic Life, funded in part by the Wisconsin Humanities Council, which took place 2005-07.
    • Continued campus-community and alumni discussion groups led by SAGLA members convened throughout the state on the value of liberal education.

Conferences and Institutes

Projects

    • UW System Liberal Arts Essay Scholarship Competition, an annual competition open to undergraduates from throughout the UW System.
    • The Syllabus Project, in which faculty list liberal education outcomes in their syllabi and discuss them with their students.
    • Renewed focus on liberal education outcomes in institutional programs for general education, writing-across-the-curriculum, and first-year experiences.
    • Adoption of LEAP or LEAP-inspired learning goals by the UW System and several UW campuses.
    • Focus groups with high school seniors and currently enrolled college students on what matters in college, conducted by AAC&U in 2005, in Wisconsin and elsewhere.
