The following activities are examples of public advocacy and outreach on behalf of liberal education in Wisconsin.

Advocacy by State Leaders

    • Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton serves on the AAC&U LEAP National Leadership Council and works through her many roles to advocate for the importance of liberal education to the 21st-century knowledge economy.
    • President Kevin Reilly is a charter member of the LEAP Campaign’s Presidents’ Trust.
    • President Reilly and Regent Vice President Mark Bradley were invited to address the Presidents’ Forum at the 2007 AAC&U Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Speeches and Articles

    • Speeches and articles by UW System Regents, Chancellors, Provosts, Deans and Faculty to outside constituents on the value of liberal education to Wisconsin’s future.

Conferences

    • A conference on Liberal Education and Wisconsin’s Promise: A Unifying Mission for the 21st Century University, co-sponsored by SAGLA and the UW System, took place in November 2008.
    • A Wingspread Conference, led by UW System President Kevin Reilly and Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton, took place in April 2008, with funding from the Johnson Foundation. The conference convened Wisconsin leaders from education, policy, business, media, and non-profit sectors to collaborate in developing a campaign promoting higher education as the key to a vibrant, knowledge-based state economy.
      • The campaign seeks to build public and student understanding about what matters in college and to establish higher standards across the board for college readiness and college achievement.
      • Follow-up Wingspread activities will continue through 2008-09, to advance a broad initiative to redouble Wisconsin’s commitment to education at all levels through the Campaign for 21st-Century Education:  Fulfilling Wisconsin’s Promise.
      • Focus groups of business leaders, in Wisconsin and elsewhere, conducted by AAC&U in early 2006.
