Liberal Education Initiative

LEAP Wisconsin is an initiative of the University of Wisconsin System that seeks to increase understanding of the value and purpose of liberal education for UW students and Wisconsin citizens.

The Recipients of the Fifth Annual
Liberal Arts Essay Scholarship Competition

Three undergraduate students from University of Wisconsin System campuses have been named recipients of the Fifth Annual UW System Liberal Arts Essay Scholarship Competition, established to support and promote liberal arts and science education throughout the state's public university system. Students were invited students to discuss the transformative nature of their educations by focusing on an experience that changed how they viewed themselves and the world.

This year's winners (with links to their essays) are:

  • Colleen Jurkiewicz, UW-Milwaukee, for “Liberal Education: A Metamorphosis of the Soul”;
  • Adria Kaurman, UW-Marinette, for “With Which to Paint Our World."
  • Evan Mast, UW-Madison, for “The Importance of Cartography.”

In addition, honorable mentions were awarded to essay writers Elena Bantle of UW-La Crosse; Nenad Jakovljevic of UW-Baraboo/Sauk County; Logan Middleton of UW-Marathon County; and Hope Schuhart of UW-Oshkosh.

“The UW System Liberal Arts Scholarship Competition highlights for all of us the outstanding students we are privileged to educate at each of our institutions,” said UW System President Kevin P. Reilly. “It also highlights the extent to which a liberal arts and science education provides students with the critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills they need to succeed in the global knowledge economy of the 21st century. As their essays demonstrate, our scholarship recipients are truly exemplary.”

Sponsored by the UW System Advisory Group on the Liberal Arts, the annual Liberal Arts Scholarship Competition is privately funded and modeled after a similar competition at UW-Oshkosh. The competition is one of many activities of the UW System's Currency of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Initiative, which seeks to make the goals and outcomes of liberal arts education accessible and valuable to all UW students, regardless of major or degree program.
