Liberal Education Initiative

The Currency of the Liberal Arts and Sciences: Rethinking Liberal Education in Wisconsin

Third Annual Liberal Arts Essay Scholarship Competition

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is this scholarship open to anyone or just to those in Liberal Arts?
The competition is open to undergraduate students in all majors, not just those in Liberal Arts.

How many scholarships will be awarded?
There will be three scholarships awarded this year: one $2,000 award for a UW Colleges' student and two $2,000 awards for students at the comprehensive and doctoral institutions.

If a student at one of the UW Colleges is eligible to apply for the scholarship, but will be transferring to another UW school (a comprehensive or doctoral institution) after this school year, can s/he still apply for the scholarship?
Yes, a UW Colleges student meets the "currently enrolled" eligibility requirement of the guidelines for UW Comprehensive and Doctoral Institutions. However, s/he will also need to meet the minimum 60 credit hours of completed course work requirement.

If I have a 3.2 gpa can I apply?
No. We are adhering to the guidelines. You must have at least a 3.4 GPA to be eligible.

One semester as a full-time student would be equivalent to 12 remaining credits. Would a part-time student with at least 12 remaining credits qualify to participate (i.e., one semester remaining)?
Only if s/he will be a full-time student in the one semester remaining.

Can the scholarship be used toward study abroad?
Yes, if it is a study abroad program offered through a UW System institution where the student is enrolled full time.
